So today we are going to tell you how to make a USB Drive bootable

Nowadays several laptop makers producing Cheapest Laptops without a CD or DVD writer So people are facing the problems to use other Operating systems, you can also use the flash drive to install Windows, instead of using the Windows installation CD.

Here below some steps to make a USB drive drive Bootable

1. Creating Bootable USB Drive Using Windows Command Prompt

Click on start and search for the Command prompt by putting CMD in the search box

Right click on it and run CMD as Administrator

It will open CMD as Administrator

Windows 8, 8.1 users can Run CMD as Administrator by right clicking on the command prompt in all apps

Now type “DISKPART” in the command prompt and press enter

It will open the DISKPART Command mode

Now type LIST DISK in DISKPART  command windows

This will show all disk connected to the system like DISK 0, Disk 1, and so on with “Status”, “Size” , “Free” etc.. We can recognize the pen drive with size. Disk 0 will be the system disk in which the windows OS is installed. In this tutorial Disk 1 is the pen drive (3819MB=4GB). This pendrive is going to be a Bootable Pendrive. Type Select Disk 1 inside the command prompt and hit“ENTER”. It will select the disk 1 (pendrive) for all coming steps

Type Clean and press enter. It will erase all the data from the pendrive.

and Type Create Partition Primary and hit ENTER. It will create a primary partition in the pendrive

Now type Select Partition 1 and press enter. It will select the partition created in the last step

Then type Format Fs Ntfs Quick and press Enter. It will format the pen drive quickly with NTFS file type

The Pendrive becomes Bootable, now copy the Operating System files from the CD/DVD and paste it in the Pendrive

Now the Pendrive is ready to use.( It may required to make changes to boot from USB in the BIOS )

2. Creating Bootable Pen Drive Using Rufus USB tool

Making a usb drive bootable is easy using RUFUS USB tool

Download the RUFUS USB tool Here

We can use RUFUS to make usb drive bootable for following Operating Systems

Here is an Example of “How to write Ubuntu by the Rufus USB tool”

  • Open Rufus and select your USB stick in the ‘Device’

And Change the settings as seen on the Screenshot

  • Now Choose the ISO image by clicking on the disk logo (Red Marked)
  • Click ‘Yes’ when it asks to download Syslinux software
  • Click ‘OK’ to write in ISO Image mode(If Needed)
  • Confirm that your USB stick is selected and then ‘OK’ to continue
  • When it is finished, Restart the computer and press the boot keys to select the Pendrive to install Ubuntu

To Write any other Operating System just choose the ISO image of the OS which you want to write and Follow the same process as above for Ubuntu
